If you're looking to become a certified scuba diver, you'll need to complete a few courses and gain some experience. You can usually get your open water rating in three to four days. This course includes elements of theoretical study, diving practices in a pool or pool-like environment, and four open water dives. After that, you'll need to complete the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver courses before you can start the Divemaster course.
You'll also need up-to-date CPR and first aid training (over the past 24 months) and 40 logged dives. If done back-to-back, these grades can take between two and four weeks. The CMAS* or equivalent comprises a theoretical section and sessions in open and confined water. It usually takes 3 to 5 days to complete.
If you are already comfortable in the water and are a swimming fan, the course can last as little as three days.
